3 Tips For Installing Posts For A Panel Fence

Taking on the challenge of building a fence around your yard? It will help to know the following tips so that the installation goes smoothly. Here are some things to know when it comes to installing the fence posts.

Know How To Prevent Fence Post Rot

A common problem of an incorrectly installed fence post is that the wood ends up touching the ground, which causes the bottom of the post to rot over time. The solution to this problem is to fill the bottom of the fence posts holes with a gravel base. This prevents water from collecting around the post and seeping deeper into the ground, which keeps the bottom of the posts from rotting over time.

Another tip for preventing post rot is to only use pressure-treated wood. Pine, cedar, and redwood are great types of wood that are going to provide the additional protection that the posts need.

Use Braces For Setting Your Fence Posts

It is crucial that your fence posts are completely straight and level when they are put into the ground. That's why you want to use braces to ensure that they don't move while the concrete is setting. This can be done by temporarily attaching some additional pieces of wood to the fence post that rests on the ground, which prevents the post from shifting around as the concrete is setting in the post hole.

Know How To Secure The Panels To The Posts

You have a couple of options for how the fence panels will be secured to the posts. For instance, you can drive nails or screws into the front-facing side of the fence panel and go directly into the post. Some people prefer this method because it is easiest, while others do not like it because you can see the screws or nails. The other option is to secure each panel to the inside edge of the posts using fasteners. This is a personal preference, and both are going to be equally as secure when it comes to installing a fence.

Trim Your Fence Posts

There is going to be excess fence post material sticking out above the fence when the panels are attached. You will want to go back and trim each post so that they are the same height. Some people measure an inch or two from the top of the fence post to determine this height and then put a nice-looking cap on the post to finish it. You'll need to use a circular saw to cut through the post to make a clean cut.
