4 Things To Tell Your Fence Contractor When Seeking Recommendations

by Devon Ramos

Many people approach their fence contractor already knowing what kind of fence they want. But if you're not sure what type of fence best suits you, then you might instead want to let your fence contractor make a recommendation. In order to make a good recommendation, though, they need to know a little about you, your family, and how you intend to use the fence. Here are some key things to share with your fence contractor when seeking a recommendation.

Do you have any pets that go outside?

If you have a dog or any other pet that you let outside, make sure you tell your fence contractor about this. Then, the fence contractor can recommend a fence that is sure to keep the pet contained. They won't recommend a material, like treated lumber, that could make a pet sick if they were to chew on it. They may also recommend a taller-than-average fence, if needed, depending on your pet's size.

Do your kids go outside and play?

If you have kids, make sure you tell the fence contractor about them and their ages. The contract will then know not to recommend types of wood that might splinter and hurt a little one's hands. They may also avoid fences that a child could climb. If you plan on having a gate put in your fence, the contractor may recommend a specific type of safe, locking gate knowing that kids will be around.

How friendly are you with your neighbors?

Good fences make good neighbors. But what constitutes a good fence? With some neighbors, a good fence may be an 8-foot privacy fence. With other neighbors, a good fence might be a chain link fence that lets them see through, but still forms a barrier. Let your fence contractor know how you and your neighbors get along so they can recommend the proper fence type.

What is your primary reason for getting a fence?

Are you getting a fence for security? Maybe your key goal is to add beauty to the property, or maybe you're really only getting the fence to keep your dog in the yard. Whatever your primary reason is for getting a fence, share it with your fence contractor so they can ensure the fence they recommend serves your primary purpose, first and foremost.

The more you tell your fence contractor about your needs, the more specific their recommendations tend to be.
