Features Of A Good Pool Fence

by Devon Ramos

As you begin looking at fences to surround your pool, you'll probably notice that some fences are marketed specifically as "pool fences." What is the difference between these fences and more general use fences that you might put elsewhere in your property? It comes down to a few key differences. Here are the key features that set pool fences apart.

Taller Height

When putting up a general fence to surround your yard, you might use 6 or 8-foot tall panels. For a pool fence, though, you typically want a 10 or 12-foot fence. This just makes the fence harder to climb over, and it restricts the view into the property, which helps ensure nobody realizes there's a pool. (If they don't know it's there, they won't jump a fence to use it.) Furthermore, many municipalities require that pool fences are at least 10 or 12 feet tall, so a standard residential fence often won't meet these requirements.

If you're wondering why pool fences cost more, it's usually due to this height difference. It takes more material to make a 10-foot fence than a 6-foot one.

Rust-Proof Material

Most residential fences are somewhat rust-proof, since they will be exposed to rain. However, pool fences tend to be exposed to even more water, and that water is generally chlorinated, which makes it even harsher. Pool fences are made from materials that can withstand this onslaught. You'll often see aluminum ones because aluminum does not rust. You may also see pool fences made from vinyl, another material that will never rust or break down due to water exposure. Steel pool fences are not nearly as common because it's tough to treat the steel in a way that prevents it from rusting for more than a few years.

Non-Climbable Design

You can find non-climbable residential fences, but many residential fences can be climbed, too. Pool fences are almost always designed to be difficult or impossible to climb. They may have completely flat panels so that someone can't get a foot grip on the side. Or, they might have vertical bars with zero cross-bars that someone could use as a foot or hand-hold. This non-climbable design will keep outsiders away from your pool, preventing accidents and insurance claims.

Now you should have a better understanding of why some fences are specifically labeled "pool fences." Keep your eyes out for these features the next time you look at fencing. For more information about choosing a pool fence, contact a fence contractor in your area.
